Annual plant belonging to the nightshade family, native to South America. It is widely cultivated for its shiny, round, red fruit containing many seeds (technically a berry), which is used in salads and cooking. (Lycopersicon esculentum, family Solanaceae.) Tomato plants are generally much branched, spreading 60–180 cm (24–72 inches).. Leaves are more or less hairy and irregularly lobed. Flowers are yellow in simple clusters. Though frost sensitive, the plant is easy to grow. The seeds are sown in nursery and transfer later to the plantation when frost risk is gone. The best results are obtained in warm lands, rich in humus. When cultivated in orchads the plant is supported by a dedicated frame to keep the fruit away from the soil and avoid the risk of rottenness.
